JC Council Meeting - Short-Term Rental Restrictions
On May 8th, an ordinance will be up for vote before the city council in Jersey City that will put significant restrictions on short-term rentals. Airbnb has pushed rent up in cities across the country, and they’ll be fighting it. Some of the reforms include:
- A 28 day annual cap on short-term rentals
- A three unit maximum on apartment buildings
- A requirement that single-family homes be owner-occupied and that at least one unit must be owner-occupied in an apartment building
You can read the full text of the ordinance here.
An Airbnb spokesperson has already published an op-ed in the Jersey Journal, and people renting out their second houses on Airbnb are coordinating to attend the council meeting en masse. But all this “grassroots organizing” is just astroturf. That’s why we need to mobilize to make sure they’re outnumbered and tenants are represented.
Please fill out this form to let us know that you can make it to the council meeting! If you can’t make it, fill it out to let us know if you can text bank other members to get as high a turnout as possible!
Note: If amendments to the ordinance are made, the vote will be delayed to May 22nd.
