Jersey City Council Meeting
We will be attending the meeting to speak in favor of the original AirBnB ordinance, and fight mega-gentrification in our community! The pro-AirBnB lobby is out in full force, with short term rental landlords fighting for their right to take unlimited affordable rentals off of the housing market. Call the City Clerk’s office to sign up to speak at 201-547-5150, or attend in support with a sign! These meetings notoriously run late (sometimes beyond midnight), so if you can’t make it at 6 or need to leave earlier, that’s still okay!
While there, we will also be providing ongoing support to JCEA teachers, as the already vastly underfunded Jersey City school system is facing profound budgets cuts and teacher and employee layoffs which will arm our community for years to come. These budget cuts are a direct result of the corporate greed of Jersey City, who has been providing “Payment in Lieu of Taxes” (or PILOT) options to real estate developers. The PILOTs are not paid to the school budgets the same way taxes are, leaving the Council to spend as they see fit and cut the support system of our schools out from under us. Demand that the City Council apply the budget surplus to the schools!
